Lent Reflection: February 20th
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. - Matthew 6:16-18
In this passage, Jesus gives FASTING 101: It is not about us! Fasting and any type of sacrifice during lent is not supposed to attract attention to ourselves...if this is the case we are missing the point. Any type of fasting is supposed to help us change our focus to what is most important. Whether it is food, or TV, or social media (that's a hard one!), it creates space for God and help us place him at the center of our lives. During this Lent, let us make fasting about God rather than ourselves!
